WiP Wednesday #29

Welcome to “Work In Progress” Wednesday. My goal for May is to get this Garfield quilt done. It’s been a real exercise in repeating the mantra, “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.” If I insist on it being perfect, it will never get finished. That doesn’t mean I’m intentionally being sloppy, just that I’m not going to go back and rip out an entire seam because the stitch lengths are marginally too long/too short/imperfect in some other way.

A sample of the stitches in question.

A shot of the border.

I’m having a lot of fun with this quilt, and I can’t wait to finish it and see what it looks like on the bed.

Projects in Progress:

Garfield Quilt:
Made from a childhood sheet of my husband’s. Added a border to make it adult-sized.
Blocks to handquilt: 4/42

Remaining Steps for Scrap Attack Quilt:
Make the quilt sandwich.
Attach everything.
Tie with thread. I picked up Pearl cotton in a size 5, and a curved needle.

*Quilt
*Binding – wish me luck!

WiP Wednesday #27

Welcome to “Work In Progress” Wednesday. It’s already been a crazy week, including one visit to a pet ER for our Maggie. I was really worried she was having renal issues, like our last senior kitty. Scary stuff, but it looks like everything will be ok. Crazy cat.

I am feeling accomplished, though, because Travis and I managed to finish a website for a nursery.

I’ve also been working on finishing a quilt for my husband. It’s been in progress for a year. How silly is that? Time to get this baby done. The top is a Garfield sheet he’s had since he was a kid. It even has a 1978 date stamp on the pattern. How neat is that?

There are 42 Garfields on it, and I’ve hand quilted three. It’s kind of relaxing to hand quilt something with a large pattern like this.

I need to finish it up so I can use my safety pins to put my Bottled Rainbow quilt together. What’s that? Just go buy more safety pins? That’s crazy talk.

WiP Wednesday #26

Welcome to “Work In Progress” Wednesday.

I got a nice surprise, and my scrap basket got a nice refill. Mom’s quilting group has been saving fabric scraps for me. Check this out. It’s like Christmas, only without the stress and pine tree.

Look at all those tiny pieces! Challenge accepted.

Here is the beginnings of a pet-sized quilt, including some of those very small scraps that were given to me. I don’t think it’s a bad start.

I like to use new fabrics, too, but I’ve really gotten to like working with more varieties of colors and patterns, in smaller quantities. My friend Lael has me salivating over Moda charm packs, now. She is a wonderfully wicked influence.

If you’re curious about what I look like when I’m working, here you go. My husband can be very sneaky with his camera. I usually hate photos of myself, but I don’t mind this one. Believe me when I say that’s high praise for the photographer. You can see his real photography here.

I’ve also been working on our garden and yard. Boise doesn’t have much of a spring. If the cool weather vegetables aren’t planted at the right time, they’ll roast or bolt before maturing. Plant too early, though, and the frost gets them. Hope I got it right. Here’s my in-progress garden bed.

I garden using a sheet composting method. Sprinkler lines run under the garden bed, so digging is out unless we want to pay to have the lines fixed. Renting is not my favorite, but our landlady is the best. We love her. The fact that I can have a garden at all is miraculous, and it’s not like digging is the only way to garden.

And last, but not least, I have made a ton of refillable catnip pouches for etsy. They’ve been an absolute blast to make.

I really need to crack down and get my two person-sized quilts done. I’m procrastinating them. Right now, they’re full of potential and promise, and obviously they’re going to be gorgeous when they’re done. Until they’re done. I’m seldom happy with a project after I’m done. So long as they remain incomplete, they’re perfect. How ridiculous is that? So. Yeah. That’s something I need to get over.

Many of my WiPs aren’t tangible – I have dozens of items that need photographed for Etsy, for instance. Good grief, I’m behind on that. The photos are where I always fall down. Anyone else have that for their weak area?

On the plus side, I finished last week’s mini quilt for Swap-bot.

I didn’t do too bad with the binding on it, and I think the back turned out well, too.

I also made a BUNCH of needlebooks. They are one of my favorite things to make. I like to imagine them being held by a craftsperson, and used to make beautiful things. I should have them up in my etsy shop soon.

WiP Wednesday #24

Wednesday, Wednesday… so good to me… ba-dah-ba-dah-dah-dah…. I’m linking up with Lee at Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday. Click on the button below to see all the people participating in it, and their projects.

I’m participating in a Swap-Bot mini quilt swap. I’m very excited to be exchanging with another befreckled redhead. What are the chances?

I will bind this, oh yes I will.

I’ve got about seven other mini quilts in progress, that need binding. I’m hoping that will be enough practice to be able to bind my larger quilts without too much in the way of bloodshed and tears.

Remaining Steps For Rainbow Quilt: After I get the Scrap Attack done (deadline is March 26), I’ll go back to working on this quilt.
*Assemble the quilt sandwich
*Quilt
*Binding – very scary. I’m going to try on my swap-bot mini-quilt, first.

Future Projects:
*Turn the wedding sari from Farah into a quilt or wall hanging.
*Table runners: 0/12

I have a quick question for those of you who use disappearing-ink fabric pens. I’ve been using the Singer branded one, and I’m just not in love with it. Even if I wait a few weeks before doing so, if I iron (or worse, steam) fabric that I’ve used the pen on, the disappearing ink shows up and become permanent. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions?
