WiP Wednesday #27

Welcome to “Work In Progress” Wednesday. It’s already been a crazy week, including one visit to a pet ER for our Maggie. I was really worried she was having renal issues, like our last senior kitty. Scary stuff, but it looks like everything will be ok. Crazy cat.

I am feeling accomplished, though, because Travis and I managed to finish a website for a nursery.

I’ve also been working on finishing a quilt for my husband. It’s been in progress for a year. How silly is that? Time to get this baby done. The top is a Garfield sheet he’s had since he was a kid. It even has a 1978 date stamp on the pattern. How neat is that?

There are 42 Garfields on it, and I’ve hand quilted three. It’s kind of relaxing to hand quilt something with a large pattern like this.

I need to finish it up so I can use my safety pins to put my Bottled Rainbow quilt together. What’s that? Just go buy more safety pins? That’s crazy talk.

I’m participating in a Swap-Bot mini quilt swap. I’m very excited to be exchanging with another befreckled redhead. What are the chances?

I will bind this, oh yes I will.

I’ve got about seven other mini quilts in progress, that need binding. I’m hoping that will be enough practice to be able to bind my larger quilts without too much in the way of bloodshed and tears.

Remaining Steps For Rainbow Quilt: After I get the Scrap Attack done (deadline is March 26), I’ll go back to working on this quilt.

*Binding – very scary. I’m going to try on my swap-bot mini-quilt, first.

I have a quick question for those of you who use disappearing-ink fabric pens. I’ve been using the Singer branded one, and I’m just not in love with it. Even if I wait a few weeks before doing so, if I iron (or worse, steam) fabric that I’ve used the pen on, the disappearing ink shows up and become permanent. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions?

WiP Wednesday #21

I was up late last night to finish up blocks, and early this morning waiting for the sunrise so I could take photos for this post. I might be getting a little obsessed. Maybe. I’m linking up with Lee at Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday. Click on the button below to see all the people participating in it, and their projects.

The fabric patterns and colors aren’t ones I would have picked, but the quilt recipient liked them, so…. I do think they’re coming together nicely, though.

Holy cow. I got 10 blocks done. Halfway there!
Blocks finished: 15/30

Remaining Steps For Rainbow Quilt: Travis and I found a sheet that will work for the backing, so I’m back in business on this quilt. I’ll be working on getting the backing on this coming week. Oh yeah.
*Decide on and purchase backing – done
*Assemble the quilt sandwich
*Quilt
*Binding – very scary. I haven’t done binding before. Maaaaaybe I’ll try it on a mock-up first.

Future Projects:
*Turn the wedding sari from Farah into a quilt or wall hanging.
*Table runners: 0/12

The blocks are 12×12″, and the finished quilt will be 5×6 blocks. It’s another QAYG (quilt as you go) project, because I enjoyed that technique so much with the bottled rainbow blocks.

I love improv piecing. It’s my very favorite. I like it so much that now I kind of hate to use patterns. The only downside to this scrappy quilt is that I’m (slightly) regretting quilting it so close together. It looks great, but this is going to take a lot of thread. My goal is to get through five blocks a week until I’m done, at which point I’ll probably hit another stumbling block in terms of buying fabric for the backing. We’ll see.

Blocks finished: 5/30

Remaining Steps For Rainbow Quilt: Still saving up $$ for the backing.
*Decide on and purchase backing – not started
*Assemble the quilt sandwich
*Quilt
*Binding

*Turn the wedding sari from Farah into a quilt or wall hanging.
*Table runners: 0/12

DIY Litter Scoop Holder

I proudly present the world’s quickest DIY litter scoop holder. Well, maybe not the world’s quickest, but still pretty darn quick. I included gratuitous photos.

Materials:
Empty carton (distilled water, milk, whatever so long as it hasn’t held cleaning chemicals)
Scissors or box knife
Sharpie (not strictly necessary, but handy)

Optional:
Duct tape (the old reliable)

1. Rinse out the carton really well. Trust me, you do not want the smell of sour milk wafting through the house if you’re using a milk carton for this.

2. Sharpie on the outline you’d like to cut out. Or just start cutting. It’s not an exact science. The size of the part you remove will vary depending on the size of your scoop.

3. Cut along the marked area. I left the handle and lid on. It should be handy for picking up the scoop holder when it’s time to dispose of it.

4. Optional part – if you’re worried about the sharp edges of the plastic, you could put a little duct tape on them.

5. Voila.

Super easy, right? Martha Stewart might not approve, but seriously, it’s to hold a litter scoop. It doesn’t need to be expensive or particularly pretty.

If you make one for yourself or have a different way of making one, please let me know. I love seeing people be creative.
