WiP Wednesday #26

Welcome to “Work In Progress” Wednesday.

I got a nice surprise, and my scrap basket got a nice refill. Mom’s quilting group has been saving fabric scraps for me. Check this out. It’s like Christmas, only without the stress and pine tree.

Look at all those tiny pieces! Challenge accepted.

Here is the beginnings of a pet-sized quilt, including some of those very small scraps that were given to me. I don’t think it’s a bad start.

I like to use new fabrics, too, but I’ve really gotten to like working with more varieties of colors and patterns, in smaller quantities. My friend Lael has me salivating over Moda charm packs, now. She is a wonderfully wicked influence.

If you’re curious about what I look like when I’m working, here you go. My husband can be very sneaky with his camera. I usually hate photos of myself, but I don’t mind this one. Believe me when I say that’s high praise for the photographer. You can see his real photography here.

I’ve also been working on our garden and yard. Boise doesn’t have much of a spring. If the cool weather vegetables aren’t planted at the right time, they’ll roast or bolt before maturing. Plant too early, though, and the frost gets them. Hope I got it right. Here’s my in-progress garden bed.

I garden using a sheet composting method. Sprinkler lines run under the garden bed, so digging is out unless we want to pay to have the lines fixed. Renting is not my favorite, but our landlady is the best. We love her. The fact that I can have a garden at all is miraculous, and it’s not like digging is the only way to garden.

And last, but not least, I have made a ton of refillable catnip pouches for etsy. They’ve been an absolute blast to make.

I really need to crack down and get my two person-sized quilts done. I’m procrastinating them. Right now, they’re full of potential and promise, and obviously they’re going to be gorgeous when they’re done. Until they’re done. I’m seldom happy with a project after I’m done. So long as they remain incomplete, they’re perfect. How ridiculous is that? So. Yeah. That’s something I need to get over.

The Week In Photos

I been working on a website… all the livelong day…

Not done, but getting there.

Sweet Jayne.

Finally admitted to myself that it’s really, really, really time to pack the tree away.

Cute video of kitties opening one of my etsy kicksticks. Love it! Thank you, Lynda!

What a great week.

“Every Rose Has Its Thorn” Is Now Stuck In My Head

I got a package? Get right out of town! Really? Cool!

Maggie’s pretty sure it’s for her. She’s half right, because I know she’ll turn the box into a playground.

Have I mentioned how much I love snail mail? I really, really love mail.

And I love flowers. And I love my friend. Triple whammy goodness!

So beautiful!

Kyra and I are working on a collaborative writing project that’s been a blast. I’d forgotten how much fun it is to write with someone else.

One of the things I appreciate about Kyra is her willingness to allow that something can turn out well. It’s not optimism, as such, but an openness that things could come out ok. It makes her a joy to be around.

Thank you, Kyra!

NaNoWriMo: Day 11

To say that I haven’t been myself is like saying badgers are a little cranky. I don’t know who I’ve been, but it wasn’t me. Not so fond of the simulacrum tottering around wearing my face. That bitch.

I’ve gradually become numb. Muffled. I miss lying on the grass in the dark, in the rain. I miss sitting in the cold listening to snow on dry leaves. I miss walking for miles through the humidity from the river. I miss the rhythm of my feet and breath and heart and thoughts. I miss digging in the garden just to feel the sun on my head, sweat threading my back, and the strength in my body.

I miss connecting with the world. Miss feeling like the dry crisp leaves, the fluttering wishes of Fall, skimmed by dry snow, hidden like a secret. I feel time in both directions, hollowed out, dry, crisp, crumbling. Filling with whispering snow.

I kept giving away chunks of me.  I’m grafting things back on, hoping they’ll take.

This whole NaNoWriMo thing is stirring up the silt. Thus all the embarassing personal confessions that keep winding up in my daily word count. Is anyone else running into this? I’ll be surprised if I’m the only one. Come on. ‘Fess up.

Eagle Bazaar: Day One

The Eagle Holiday Bazaar was an absolute blast today! We met tons of people, and heard so many stories from cat owners. One in particular struck a cord.

The kitty’s owner (a woman) was stationed in Bahrain, and found a tiny grey tabby. It was too young to be away from its kitty mama. She tucked the kitten into her jacket to it until she returned to base. Then she bottle fed it and loved it back to health. It grew into a healthy adolescent. When her deployment was up, the baby boy came all the way back to the states with her! That’s a 24 hour flight. Tiger was good for nearly the whole flight, mewing a little just in the last stretch. The owner kindly shared a few photos of Tiger. You should see this cat now. He’s got a long, pointed face and very long body – very different from the usual moggie that one sees stateside. Tiger is one lucky kiddo.
